The Basics
Is WheelToChoose completely free to use?
Yes. Every feature — image uploads, custom themes, weighted slices, PDF export, and the dedicated Stream Mode — is available without payment or registration. There are no daily spin limits. The tool is ad-supported to help cover hosting and development costs.
How many entries can I add to the wheel?
The wheel engine can handle hundreds of entries. Text and slice widths scale automatically so every name remains visible. For the smoothest 60 FPS animation, we recommend staying under 500 entries. You can paste a comma-separated list to add many names at once.
How does the randomness work — is the wheel rigged?
The winner is chosen before the animation starts using the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), which draws from your device's hardware entropy — the same standard used in TLS encryption. The physics-based spin then lands on that pre-determined result. Everything runs in your browser; no server decides the outcome.
Make It Yours
Can I add images to individual wheel slices?
Yes. Click the 📷 upload icon next to the name input to attach a photo (PNG, JPG, or WebP, max 2 MB) to any entry. The image is displayed inside the slice and scales automatically. You can also upload a full wheel-face image, a center logo, and a page background via Advanced Options. Each image modal offers a curated gallery plus a custom upload button (max 5 MB). Uploaded entry images are stored on our server and automatically deleted after 30 days. See our Privacy Policy for details.
What visual customization options are available?
Per-slice colors with a full hex picker, per-entry images, a wheel-face overlay, a center logo with adjustable size (0–100%), page backgrounds (gallery or upload), live canvas animations, three color themes (Default, Neon, Gold), light and dark mode, ten winner sounds with preview, three celebration styles (confetti, fireworks, none), and three spin durations (short, medium, long). You can also hide the Q&A section and footer for a clean view, and mute tick or winner sounds independently.
How do the Light and Dark themes work?
Toggle Light Theme in Advanced Options to switch the entire UI — controls, modals, and footer — to a bright color scheme. The setting is saved in local storage and persists across sessions. It works alongside the Default, Neon, and Gold color themes and is supported on both the main page and the Stream Mode dashboard. The light theme is particularly useful when projecting in well-lit classrooms or conference rooms.
What is the Center Image feature?
It lets you place a custom image — such as a logo or mascot — inside the wheel's center hub. Unlike the Wheel Image (which overlays the entire face), the center image sits inside the white hub and stays fixed while the wheel rotates. Set it via Advanced Options → Center Image gallery or upload your own. Adjust the hub size with the Center Wheel Size dropdown (0% Hidden to 100%).
Your Information, Protected
Where is my data stored?
Names, colors, weights, and settings live in your browser's local storage. Uploaded entry images are sent to our server and automatically deleted after 30 days. Custom wheel, center, and background images are also stored on our server. Wheels published to the Community Gallery are retained permanently. Stream Mode data is auto-deleted after 7 days of inactivity. No account is required, and we do not sell user data. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I save and load a wheel configuration?
Click Save and enter a filename. A .wheel file containing all names, image references, colors, weights, and settings downloads to your device. To reload it later, click Load and select the file — the wheel is restored instantly. Note: entry images are deleted from our server after 30 days, so saved files loaded after that period may have missing images unless the wheel was shared to the Gallery.
Why did my list disappear?
Data is tied to your browser's local storage. It can be lost if you used Incognito/Private mode, manually cleared site data or cookies, switched to a different device or browser, or clicked Reset in the toolbar. Always use the Save feature to download a backup .wheel file for important lists.
Does the site show ads or use analytics?
We may display third-party ads and use analytics services to cover hosting costs and understand how the tool is used. The Stream Mode overlay is completely ad-free by design. You can use browser ad-blockers or cookie settings to manage these technologies. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
Power User Tips
Can winners be removed automatically after each spin?
Yes. Enable Auto-Remove in Advanced Options and each winner is taken off the wheel right after being picked. If you prefer manual control, the winner popup offers both "Remove & Close" and "Keep & Close." In Stream Mode, Auto-Remove changes are pushed to the overlay automatically so viewers always see an up-to-date wheel.
Does the wheel work on mobile devices and tablets?
Yes. WheelToChoose is a Progressive Web App optimized for all screen sizes. Install it to your home screen for an app-like experience — no app store needed. It is fully tested on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge across iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS. A fullscreen button, hideable control panel, and touch-drag resizable entry list ensure a smooth mobile experience. Core functionality works offline once loaded.
Can teachers use this for classrooms?
Yes. Teachers use WheelToChoose to randomly select students, assign groups, and pick activities. Save separate .wheel files for each class period. Export winner history as a PDF for documentation. The light theme improves visibility when projecting in well-lit rooms. No accounts, downloads, or IT approvals are needed — just open the site and spin.
What are Weighted Slices and how do they work?
Weighted Slices let you give certain entries a higher or lower chance of being selected. Enable the feature in Advanced Options and adjust each entry's weight from 1 to 100 using the + and − controls. A weight of 3 makes a slice three times larger — and three times more likely to be picked — than a weight of 1. The cryptographic RNG still determines the outcome; weights only change the probability distribution.
How do I share my wheel or browse the Community Gallery?
Click Share → agree to guidelines → add a title and tags → choose Shareable Link (private URL) or Public Gallery (searchable) → Upload & Share. You'll receive a unique URL. Click Gallery to search by name or tags and load any shared wheel into your own configuration. All shared content is moderated — keep submissions family-friendly.
What winner sounds are available?
Ten options: Default, Applause, Fanfare, Bell, Ta-da!, Air Horn, Cheer, Magic, Game, and You Win. Preview any sound from the dropdown in Advanced Options using the ▶ button. You can also independently mute the tick sound (the click as the wheel passes each slice) and the winner announcement sound. The tick is generated via the Web Audio API for zero-latency playback; winner sounds are loaded from audio files.
What do the Shuffle and Sort buttons do?
Shuffle randomly reorders all entries using a Fisher-Yates algorithm backed by the same cryptographic RNG used for spins. Sort A-Z arranges entries alphabetically with locale-aware comparison (handles numbers, accents, and special characters). Both update the wheel immediately and save the new order to local storage.
What are Live Background Animations?
Dynamic canvas-based visual effects — particles, waves, geometric patterns — that play behind the wheel. Choose one from the Live BG card in Advanced Options; a live mini-preview plays inside the card so you can see the effect before applying. They run on a separate canvas layer and are optimized to keep the wheel animation smooth. Remove an animation by clicking the × on the "Live BG" tag in the active features list.
Can I resize the entry list to see more or fewer names?
Yes. Drag the handle below the names list to show between 2 and 20 rows. The height snaps to the nearest clean row so entries don't get cut off. Your preference is saved to local storage and restored on future visits. The handle works with both mouse drag and touch drag on mobile.
What are Templates?
Pre-built wheel configurations at the bottom of the main page — Yes/No, A to Z, 0 to 10, and Fast Food. Click Show Wheel Templates to reveal the cards, then click any card to load its entries instantly. You can customize colors, weights, and settings before spinning.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Ctrl + Enter spins the wheel from anywhere on the page. The input field supports comma-separated bulk entry. Click any name in the list to edit it inline. Press Enter in any modal to confirm the action. The system also auto-detects duplicate entries and offers to skip or add them.
Live Streaming Setup
Is the tool safe for live streaming on Twitch or YouTube?
Yes. WheelToChoose includes a dedicated Stream Mode at /streaming.html with a transparent Browser Source URL for OBS. The overlay shows only the wheel — no panels, no buttons, no ads. For simpler setups, use fullscreen mode and screen-share the browser tab. Confetti, fireworks, and sounds all display correctly. Supported platforms include OBS Studio, Streamlabs, XSplit, Twitch Studio, TikTok Studio, YouTube Live, Discord, Kick, and Prism Live.
How do I set up Stream Mode with OBS step by step?
- Open /streaming.html and copy the unique Browser Source URL displayed on the page.
- In OBS, add a new Browser Source, paste the URL, and set the size to 800×800 px.
- Edit your wheel on the Stream Mode dashboard — add names, change settings, or load from the Gallery.
- Click Push Changes to Overlay, then in OBS right-click the source → Refresh.
- Spin the wheel. After the winner is announced, changes auto-push so the overlay stays in sync.
A unique 16-character stream key links your dashboard to your overlay. Do not share the URL publicly. Pushed data auto-deletes after 7 days of inactivity. Tip: enable "Refresh browser when scene becomes active" in OBS source properties for automatic syncing.
